One of the top singers in Canada, let alone the world, is Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. Praised as much for her stage presence as for her musicality, Bayrakdarian has carved out a successful worldwide recital and opera career. She began her ascent with first prize in the 2000 Operalia competition, founded by Placido Domingo, and followed that with her first recording for CBC records; 'Joyous Light' – a CD of traditional Armenian songs, which topped the charts of Canadian Classical recordings in 2002. Since then she has won four consecutive Juno awards (2004-2007) in the Classical Vocal category for releases such as 'Azulao', featuring Spanish and Latin American songs, 'Cleopatra', showcasing arias by Handel, Hasse and Graun, 'Songs of Pauline Viradot-Garcia', and the critically acclaimed 'Mozart:Arie & Duetti' with Michael Schade and Russell Braun. A 2007 release, 'Tango Notturno' featured popular tangos arranged by Serouj Kradjian. Bayrakdarian was the subject of the film 'A Long Journey Home', which documented her first trip to Armenia. She has also been featured on soundtracks such Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, as part of the Mozart 250th Anniversary Salzburg Festival, and is in demand on opera stages across the world.
